  • What is sal (Shorea robusta) seed?
  • Sal (Shorea robusta) seed is a nontimber forest product, mainly processed for its oil. This oil is used in various food and nonfood industries. Prior to extraction of oil, sal seeds are manually broken to obtain sal kernel. This traditional de‐shelling process is very tedious, time consuming and unhygienic.
  • Does Shorea robusta seed have a wing?
  • Physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of Shorea robusta seed with wing, seed without wing, and kernel were investigated in the present work. The physico-chemical composition of sal oil was also analyzed.
  • What is Shorea robust?
  • Shorea robust is commonly known as sal, is a non timber forest product of India. The sal is a major source of income generation in rural and tribal areas. Apart from the timber and its leaves, sal seeds were major source of oil (oil contains around 30.20%). The sal oil can be used for manufacture food and non-food industries.
  • What is the proximate composition of Shorea robusta seeds?
  • According to the proximate composition analysis Shorea robusta seeds are good source of fat, protein, crude fiber, and carbohydrates compared to other oil seeds. These seeds can be utilized as an alternate source of edible oil and protein. Table 7. Proximate composition of seeds with wing, seed without wings, and kernels Table 8.
  • Are Shorea robusta seeds a good source of carbohydrate?
  • The results show that the carbohydrate content of seeds with wing is higher than the seeds without wing and kernel (Table 8). According to the proximate composition analysis Shorea robusta seeds are good source of fat, pro-tein, crude fiber, and carbohydrates compared to other oil seeds.
  • What is Shorea robusta?
  • Shorea robusta, commonly known as sal, belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae family. Sal is an important non timber forest product (NTFP) and it is available in many south Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
